I was a year one participant and when I got my notebook I wasn't really sure what to do with it. I'm not very capable when it comes to sketching or drawing and typically spend most of my time writing screenplays, so I decided to use the notebook as an experiment of sorts, where I'd sit down in the evening and write whatever came to mind until I felt I'd found a natural ending. The notebook quickly became a collection of very random short stories. I didn't adopt a theme, just for the most part, from what I remember, wrote in the first person and didn't limit myself in terms of subject matter or setting or ideas. There are a few stories in the notebook I'm still quite fond of and others that I can't really remember if I'm honest. I was conscious in the final week that the notebook would become part of a collection and figured that the caliber of the others would be much higher in terms of visual creativity, so in order to give mine some sort of identity, and considering the bat-shit mad nature of the contents, I decided to set fire to the pages and play with the stories within in terms of what would remain. Really I was thinking about finding a notebook in such a condition in a press or some old house, and the curiosity it might evoke. It was fun to put together and terrifying when I had to let it go, but, considering the quality of the other participants' notebooks, I'm glad it ended up in such good company.
